“For the Strength of Youth” was the message given to Kwesethu High School, Durban, South Africa, students gathered on July 18- Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday. As a birthday gift to Mandela, South Africans were encouraged to give 67 minutes of service to their community - one minute for each year Mandela served the country.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Durban Stake, wanted to be part of his birthday celebration. They made arrangements to teach the importance of values to youth at Kwesethu High School in the Kwamashu area of Durban, South Africa.

One hundred-seven students gathered in a large classroom to hear topics including:
- Nelson Mandela’s example of commitment, service, seeking an education, and rising above limiting circumstances;
- "For the Strength of Youth” topics family, friends, appearance, language, and sexual purity;
- Hope for the future through education and family life;
- Appropriate use of technology
A “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet was given to each student, along with a "Strength" pocket card for quick reference. Students were excited to receive this program and many asked for more pamphlets to share with their friends and family.
The youth are the future of this country. The values they instil in themselves now will affect them, their families, and their community for generations to come. The example of leaders such as Nelson Mandela, caring teachers, and volunteers, will help them understand the great contribution they can make in their lives.
Senior missionary couple Elder Jerry and Sister Tina Murdock, Durban Stake President Magaqa, and Durban Public Affairs committee member Graham Sabela organized the school function. Six full time elders serving missions in the Kwamashu area also volunteered their time.
