Historic Pioneer Trek Commemorated in Roodepoort

Members of the Roodepoort Stake celebrated the 1847 Mormon Pioneer Trek dressed in authentic costumes, playing games, dancing and fun!

Members young and old from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Roodeport Stake joined together at the Krugersdorp Chapel to enjoy a Pioneer Day Celebration on 25 July 2015. The event was commemorating the Mormon Pioneer Trek from Nauvoo, Illinois (USA) to the Salt Lake Valley. Those faithful pioneers arrived in the valley 24 July 1847.

Participants re-enacted the historial journey of Mormon pioneers, as they pulled "handcarts" up the hill to the chapel. Young children made toys and played games that pioneer children would have played. Even adults joined in the fun of pioneer games!

One of the event organizers, Sister Thando Phanyaphanya, explained, "It was a time to reflect on what the ones before us have done, and to also celebrate the new generation of modern pioneers!"

The following is a picture gallery of the day's exciting events:
