Peter Chinyumba , Blantyre District President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, appealed to all Malawians and political parties to conduct peaceful political campaign gatherings during the forthcoming tripartite elections.
Twelve media representatives from television, radio and newspapers attended the media event at the Blantyre Chapel on 9 May, 2014 and heard the message from District President Chinyuma about the Malawi elections. The media were also informed about the Church and its programs, followed by a tour of the Blantyre building. Media representatives were from Malawi Voice, Radio Maria, Star Radio, Galaxy Radio, SABC Channel Africa, AFJ Television, Nation News, Malawi Electrol Commission, The Enquirer, Daily Times Television and For All Jesus Television.
The Church itself is politically neutral, but encourages members to vote in elections.
"As the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 'we believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law'. The Church encourages members to be responsible citizens in their respective communities, including becoming involved in a well prepared voting process," said Edward Matale (See Church's Articles of Faith #12).
The Church said it would continue involving the whole country in prayers through fasting so that the election passes peacefully and the nation takes the path of progress and prosperity.
