Groundbreaking of New Mormon Temple in Kinshasa Announced

The First Presidency of the Church publically announced the ground-breaking of the fourth temple in Africa will take place Friday, February 12. 2016

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has publically announced the ground-breaking for the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of Congo Temple.

Ceremonies of turning over shovels of dirt to signal the beginning of construction will be held for the Kinshasa Temple on the afternoon of Friday, February 12, 2016 in Kinshasa.

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside at the event.  He will be joined by members of the Africa South East Area Presidency and local leaders of the Church.

The Kinshasa Temple was announced at the Church’s October 2011 General Conference, and has long been anticipated.

Attendance at these ceremonies is by invitation only, with the general public and members being invited to view the proceedings live from local meetinghouses, either by internet or local television transmission.

Africa currently has three Temples in operation— in Ghana, Johannesburg and Nigeria — and two others have been announced in the Ivory Coast and Durban, South Africa.

After completion, the open house date for the Kinshasa Temple will be announced, and the public may tour the temple before it is dedicated. Dates for dedication will be forthcoming.

The Church currently has 148 temples in operation throughout the world.
