A Miracle Brings Donation to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital’s Children’s Speech and Hearing Department.

There was a miracle at work when Pamela Ramushu, an audiologist at the hospital, had a thought to call Cathy Donnelly Dye.

Cathy made some phone calls that led to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ humanitarian arm.  Working with Elder and Sister Robinson, project managers and humanitarian senior missionaries, led to the therapeutic lending library becoming a reality.

April 5, 2017 was the handover of the project.  The hospital invited Elder and Sister Robison to come so they could offer their thanks.

With many audiologists, hospital CEO, department heads, doctors,  patients, and family members, the Robinsons came with humanitarian directors and missionaries, Elder and Sister Scott, and public affairs missionaries Elder and Sister Gatten to “turn over” the library to the hospital.

Also included in the donation were a computer, projector, laminator and screen;  tools to provide a way for parents/families to help children increase in verbal and nonverbal communication through effective language stimulation techniques.

“We aim to empower each caregiver so that he/she is successful at facilitating the development of his/her child’s speech and language.”

The department believes a quote by Marilyn Jager Adams, “Reading out loud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read.”

Countless children are helped through the efforts of this amazing staff of caring professionals.

The meeting and luncheon were attended by over 25 people.  A tour was given afterwards of the department.  Elder Scott, coincidentally a retired Audiologist, particularly enjoyed the tour.

Senior Missionaries, like the Robisons, Scotts, and Gattens serve for 18-24 months on a voluntary basis paying for all their own personal expenses.  The Church has a worldwide humanitarian program that is centered around Christ like service, with a focus on building self-reliance.
